MY PROCESS
My portraits are painted in three steps.
To quote my art instructor and mentor Michelle Fleming’s succinct words: “it’s just paint”, which means that at this first stage of development, it can be changed, rearranged and put back into scale with a little solvent.
I paint all my canvases in Transparent Red Oxide first as an underpainting. Its in this stage that I look with a critical eye to see what I have been missing.
My underpainting must be perfect before I apply colour. Colour is the point of no return. My secret tools are my fingertips for contouring the face and Q tips to reduce the paint, creating the subtleties of highlights and darks in my first draft. I let my red oxide underpainting cure for a least 2 weeks before I paint over it - that’s the fun part!.”
